Today a young woman named Laurence Dumortier stopped by my office. A recent graduate in English from Loyola Marymount College, she was seeking advice about Ph.D. programs. But she also runs Cloverfield Press in Los Angeles, where she and a tiny team of book lovers publish small volumes. (Think of it as a microbindery.)
Laurence brought me the latest: a short story by LA author, artist, and film maker Miranda July called The Boy From Lam Kien. (Endpapers featured above; designed by Elinor Nissley.) The cover is letter pressed, and the book is saddle stitched. The diminutive numbered octavo goes for $15.00 (“We break even,” Laurence told me wryly.)
No small press in your neighborhood? Well, now you can start your own, with help from Ellen’s latest book, Indie Publishing.
