I was excited to receive an email from Eileen Fisher today promising to reveal “the secret life of scarves.” In principle I love scarves, but in practice they make me feel like a swaddled infant or a top-heavy corn husk doll. I appreciate a scarf’s potential to add a flash of color to the mid-life wardrobe, but I have not yet gotten the hang of pulling off the look with confidence.
Just what is the secret life of scarves? What do they do in the closet when we’re off wearing something more sensible? And what do they say about us when we drape them around our bodies? Scarves can offer portraits, perhaps, of one’s mental stateāor one’s lack of self-awareness in the grooming department. My kingdom for a personal stylist!
